Future Potential
Economic CHP potential exists for direct contact water heating, indirect thermal fluid heating and indirect air/gas heating. CHP also appears promising for larger system applications. 2-50 MW CHP potential
An economic screening assessment was done by Energy and Environmental Analysis, Inc (2004) for CHP applications between 2 and 50 MW. The study calculated the number of new, economically viable, CHP sites in various market sectors. Results suggested that there was potential for an additional 61 Chemicals and Allied Products sites across the nation.1 Pharmaceutical sites were not specifically broken out; but the authors pointed to pharmaceuticals as a "promising sector for growth in CHP installations" in this size range.11 MW and smaller CHP potential
Resource Dynamics (2001) evaluated the economic potential for CHP in smaller capacity industrial applications (1 MW or less).3 In this size range, the authors identified six thermal processes in the pharmaceutical manufacturing work flow where CHP might be integrated into existing facilities.These were:3
