Commercial Facility
Commercial buildings of all types are candidates for CHP, especially in the hot, humid Gulf Coast states, where the need to air condition through the long cooling season provides a consistent need for heat to drive thermally-activated chillers and dehumidifiers. Today, commercial CHP tends to be in large, high occupancy buildings with large thermal (especially hot water) loads such as hotels and office buildings. Tightening emissions regulations, especially in the region's non-attainment zones, make small-scale CHP more difficult, although the increasing use of "output based emissions" standards is providing a regulatory mechanism to better account for the emissions benefits of CHP. In addition, zero-emission fuel cells are generating interest in the commercial sector due to their low-emissions operation.
